Understanding Medicare Basics
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older. It has different parts:
Part A – Hospital insurance
(inpatient care, skilled nursing)
Part B – Medical insurance
(doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services)
Part D – Prescription drug coverage
(optional but recommended)
Once you have Parts A & B, you need to choose how you want to receive your benefits. You have two main paths:
-
If you have Medicare and Medicaid, you may qualify for a Medicare Advantage Dual Special Needs plan, otherwise known as (DSNP) which may include additional benefits not covered under original Medicare, that can help with everyday household expenses and your overall health and wellbeing.
-
There is no Medicaid requirement, but you must be diagnosed with chronic health condition such as diabetes, cardiovascular
And with this plan you may qualify for additional benefits not covered under original Medicare.
that can help with everyday household expenses and your overall health and wellbeing.
-
Medicare Advantage Plans are "all-in-one" alternatives to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies.
What's included:
Medicare Parts A, B, and usually Part D (prescription coverage)
Extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, and OTC allowances
Out-of-pocket maximum for financial protection
Best for:
People who want extra benefits beyond Original Medicare
Those comfortable using network providers
Individuals looking for $0 or low monthly premiums (you still pay Part B premium)
Things to know:
You typically must use in-network doctors and hospitals
Plans can change annually during open enrollment
-
Medicare Supplement Insurance works with Original Medicare to cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance.
How it works:
Your doctor bills Medicare → Medicare pays 80% → Your Supplement pays the remaining 20%
Little to no out-of-pocket costs at time of service
Best for:
People who want complete freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare
Frequent travelers or those with multiple specialists
Anyone who values predictable healthcare costs
Things to know:
Does NOT include prescription drug coverage—you need a separate Part D plan
Monthly premiums are typically higher than Medicare Advantage
Coverage stays consistent year after year
Kentucky residents: Ask about the Birthday Rule to save money on your Supplement plan.
-
Medicare Part D covers prescription medications. If you choose Original Medicare with a Supplement, you'll need a standalone Part D plan.
What you need to know:
Each plan has its own list of covered drugs (formulary)
Medications are organized into cost tiers
Avoid late enrollment penalties by signing up when first eligible
How we help: We'll review your medications and find a Part D plan that covers your prescriptions at the lowest cost.
-
Dual Special Needs Plans (DSNP)
If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, you may qualify for a DSNP with extra benefits like:Transportation to appointments
Meal delivery
OTC allowances
Help with utility bills
Kentucky Birthday Rule
Kentucky residents can switch Medicare Supplement plans without health questions during a 60-day window starting on their birthday. This could save you $100s to $1,000+ per year.

Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental or vision care. Standalone dental and vision insurance can help you maintain your oral health and eyesight without breaking the bank.
Dental coverage may include:
Routine cleanings and exams
X-rays, fillings, and extractions
Crowns, bridges, and dentures
Root canals and periodontal care
Vision coverage may include:
Annual eye exams
Eyeglasses or contact lenses
Frames and lenses
Discounts on LASIK and other procedures
Good to know: Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental and vision benefits. If you have Original Medicare with a Supplement, you may want to add standalone coverage.
-
Life insurance provides financial protection for your loved ones when you pass away. Whether you want to cover final expenses, pay off debts, or leave an inheritance, life insurance ensures your family won't face financial hardship during an already difficult time.
Types of life insurance we offer:
Term Life Insurance – Affordable coverage for 10, 20, or 30 years
Whole Life Insurance – Permanent coverage with cash value
Final Expense Insurance – Covers funeral and burial costs ($5,000–$25,000)
Guaranteed Issue Life – No health questions
Why it matters: When a life insurance death benefit is paid, your family won't be burdened with funeral bills, medical debt, or outstanding expenses. It's one of the most caring gifts you can leave behind. Leave A Legacy, Not A Funeral Bill.
-
Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays you cash benefits if you're hospitalized—regardless of what other insurance you have. You can use the money for medical bills, living expenses, or anything else you need.
How it works:
You receive a lump sum payment for hospital admission
Daily benefits for each day you're hospitalized
Additional benefits for ICU stays or outpatient surgery
Cash is paid directly to you, not the hospital
Why consider it: Even with Medicare or health insurance, hospital stays can result in significant out-of-pocket costs. Hospital Indemnity Insurance helps cover deductibles, coinsurance, and everyday expenses while you recover.
Best for: Anyone who wants extra financial protection in case of hospitalization.
-
If you're under 65, self-employed, or don't have access to employer-sponsored health insurance, we can help you find an individual health plan that meets your needs and budget.
Coverage options include:
Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace plans
Short-term health insurance
Catastrophic coverage plans
Health sharing plans
What's typically covered: Doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, preventive care, emergency services, maternity care, mental health services, and more.
How we help: We'll explain your options, help you understand subsidies and tax credits you may qualify for, and guide you through enrollment.
Best for: Individuals and families who need comprehensive health coverage outside of Medicare.
